Eddie Murphy Lives on Fantasy Island

~ 3.22.07 ~

Eddie Murphy has been out of touch with reality ever since he stomped off mad after not winning an Oscar (despite the fact that Norbit’s concurrent theater run gave the Academy a poignant reminder of Mr. Murphy’s true range). Now, Eddie’s using his illusion by signing up for a remake of Fantasy Island, the hit show from the late 1970s starring Ricardo Montalban and Hervé Villechaize.

He’s even re-teaming with the Norbit writers, a move that at least shows that Murphy understands his place in Hollywood:

Norbit writers, Jay Scherick and David Ronn, have been brought aboard for a re-write and Eddie Murphy is expected to play several roles in the film a la Nutty Professor and Norbit. No word on a director or any other cast members at this time.

With the Norbit guys on board, we can expect plenty of deviation from the original concept, including the inevitable fat suit and Eddie playing everyone except the diminutive Tattoo, who Verne Troyer will likely handle. Scherick and Ronn even tried to work in a light rail concept that connects the island to the mainland, rather than the trademark puddle-jumping airplane, but they ran into script problems.

Tattoo: “Boss, de tranny, de tranny!”

Mr. Roarke: “That’s train, Tattoo.”

Tattoo: “Sorry Boss.”

    Sure thing.

The big screen movie needs to come first.
